This species is uncommon. It inhabits grasslands of mountainous regions (1,200m-5,500m). It is migratory, breeding in Kazakhstan, China, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and India (mainly in the Himalaya), wintering in Cambodia, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. It mainly forages on carrion (BirdLife International 2017).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is stable, with the current population estimate of 66,000-334,000 individuals. The major threat to this species is the ingestion of highly toxic Diclofenac (an NSAID used for livestock). Other threats include nesting habitat degradation and ingestion of deleterious pesticides and fungicides (BirdLife International 2017).
