It inhabits subtropical evergreen and deciduous forests on the hilly regions at the heights of 600-2,000m in India (mainly in West Bengal, Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh), China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. It mostly forages on fruits (BirdLife International 2018).
Conservation Status:
This species is listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).
According to the IUCN Red List Assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population estimate of 7,000-10,000 individuals. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to agriculture and other human encroachments. Adult survival is also possibly low due to hunting for feathers, meat and trading casques (BirdLife International 2001).
