This endemic Indian species is extremely rare. It inhabits grasslands in the desert and semi-arid areas of India (mainly Rajasthan and Maharashtra) and Pakistan. It congregates in less disturbed grasslands for breeding during mid-summer and monsoon (BirdLife International 2018).

This species is listed as Critically Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


According to the IUCN Red List Assessment, the population of this species is declining and its current population size is estimated approx. between 50 and 249. The threats to its persistence come from habitat disturbance due to large scale agriculture, mining and other human encroachment (BirdLife International 2018).
