Haematopus ostralegus - Eurasian Oystercatcher



This species is uncommon. It inhabits inland wetlands and coastal marshes. It is migratory and it has three breeding flyway populations, first from Scandinavia to Russia, second from Central Russia to India, and third from East Russia to China, and wintering in southeast Asia. It breeds during April-July, in pairs or small groups. It mostly forages on marine invertebrates (BirdLife International 2019).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population estimate of 500,000-999,999 individuals. The threats to its persistence come from over-fishing and wintering habitat disturbance due to human encroachments (BirdLife International 2019).
