This migratory species is very rare. It inhabits grasslands of the Northeastern Himalayas, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It is now possibly extinct in Bangladesh.

According to the IUCN Red List Assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population size estimated approximately between 250 and 999 individuals. The threats to its persistence come from habitat disturbance due to large-scale agriculture and other human encroachments. Adult survival is also possibly low due to excessive hunting for sport and/or food (BirdLife International 2018).
