This is species uncommon. It inhabits inland wetlands and freshwater marshes of India (mainly in Kerala), Myanmar, Pakistan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. This has undergone possible extirpation from China (BirdLife International 2016).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population estimate of 16,000-24,000 individuals. One of the threats to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to agriculture and other human encroachments. Another threat is hunting and egg poaching (BirdLife International 2016).
