This species is uncommon. It inhabits dry and deciduous secondary forests of India (mainly northeast and Andaman Islands), Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar Thailand, and Cambodia. It mostly forages on seeds, fruits, flowers, and nectar (BirdLife International 2017).

This species is listed as Near Threatened in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/)According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, and the current population size is unknown. The major threats include capturing and habitat disturbance due to agriculture (BirdLife International 2017).
