This species is uncommon and is endemic to the Nicobar Islands. It inhabits tall forests in the coastal areas of the islands, from the sea level up to 190m (BirdLife International 2019).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population estimate of 6,000-15,000 individuals. The threats to its persistence come from capturing for bird-trading and habitat disturbance due to natural calamities (BirdLife International 2019).
