This species is uncommon. It inhabits coniferous and pine-oak forests on the hills in India (mainly in Assam) and China, up to 4,000m. It mostly forages on seeds, crops, insects and leaf buds (BirdLife International 2016).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, and its current population size is unknown. The threats to its persistence come from habitat disturbance due to logging and capturing for trading (BirdLife International 2016).
