This species is rare. It inhabits dense grasslands in the Terai region of the Himalaya in India (mainly in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Assam) and Nepal. It breeds during May-September and forages in flocks (BirdLife International 2018).

According to the IUCN Red List Assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population estimate of 2,500-9,999 individuals. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to large-scale agriculture and other human encroachments. This species is also captured for trading (BirdLife International 2001).
