This species is uncommon. It inhabits tall grasslands of the lowlands and swamps with emergent vegetation in the Terai of India (from Uttar Pradesh to the Brahmaputra lowlands), Nepal and Bangladesh (BirdLife International 2018).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population estimate of 2,500-9,999 individuals. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to wetland drainage and clearance of grasslands for agriculture (BirdLife International 2018).
