This rare species is migratory and nocturnal. It mainly inhabits the inland wetlands and tropical forests of northern Vietnam, southern China, and northern Indo-China regions. It mainly forages on small fish and some invertebrates. 

Conservation Status:

This species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining.
