This species is uncommon. It inhabits moist undergrowth evergreen forests of hilly regions of India (mainly in Sikkim, West Bengal, and Arunachal Pradesh), Bhutan and Nepal at the heights of 1,500m-2,500m (BirdLife International 2017).

This species is listed as Near Threatened in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/)
According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, and the current population size is unknown. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to logging, firewood collecting and shifting cultivation (BirdLife International 2017).
