Subspecies in India

Photo Gallery and Species Biology
This species is uncommon. It inhabits grasslands in mountainous terrains in semi-arid areas. It is migratory, breeding in Spain, Bulgaria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and India (mainly northern regions), and wintering in Nepal, Myanmar, Saudi Arabia, Republic of Korea, and India (in Gujarat and Rajasthan). It mostly forages on carrions, snakes, and insects (BirdLife International 2018).
Conservation Status:

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population estimate of 15,600-21,000 individuals. The threats to its persistence come from habitat disturbance, ingestion of Diclofenac (an NSAID used for livestock), hunting for feathers, and inadequate availability of food (BirdLife International 2018).
