This species is uncommon. It inhabits grasslands of steppes and hills. It is migratory, breeding in Mongolia, China, Russia, Republic of Korea, and Japan during April-August, wintering in India (mainly in the Northeastern region), Cambodia, Vietnam, Italy, and the U.S.A. it mostly forages on plant matters and small land invertebrates (BirdLife International 2016).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining and its current population size is unknown. The threat to its persistence is not fully understood, but it is perhaps threatened by habitat disturbance and hunting (BirdLife International 2016).
