This species is uncommon. It inhabits moist oak forests, grasslands and terrace of hilly regions of India (north-west region), Pakistan, and China, at the heights of 2,400m-3,600m (BirdLife International 2017).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining,and its current population size is unknown. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to large-scale agriculture and overgrazing (BirdLife International 2017).
