This species is uncommon. It inhabits coastal areas of the tundra regions. It is migratory, breeding in Arctic coasts, and wintering in Algeria, Barbados, Belgium, Israel, India, Cambodia, and Turkmenistan. It forages mainly insects and worms during breeding season, molluscs and crustaceans on the wintering grounds (BirdLife International 2017).
Conservation Status:

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining and its current population size is unknown. The threats to its persistence come from habitat disturbance due to land reclamation, pollution, and hunting (BirdLife International 2017).
