This species is rare. It inhabits inland wetlands and grasslands on the river banks and floodplains of India (mainly in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh), Nepal, Pakistan, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. It is often found in small groups or pairs (BirdLife International 2016).

According to the IUCN Red List Assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population estimate of 2,500-9,999 individuals. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to large-scale agriculture and commercial developments (BirdLife International 2016).
