This species is uncommon. It inhabits inland wetlands and grasslands of plains in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. This species has gone under possible extinction in Laos (BirdLife International 2017).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining and its current global population size is unknown.
