Subspecies in India
This species is listed as Critically Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).
Photo Gallery and Species Biology
This species inhabits inland wetlands and grasslands with cold climatic conditions. It is migratory, breeding in eastern Asia (Russia) and wintering in other parts of eastern and southeast Asia (Azerbaijan, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Cambodia). It used to winter in central and northern India until the early 2000s, but that migratory subpopulation is now possibly extinct (BirdLife International 2018).
Conservation Status:
This species is listed as Critically Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).
According to the IUCN Red List Assessment, the population of this species is declining and its current population size is unknown. Threats to its persistence come from habitat disturbance due to large scale agriculture and other human encroachments. Survival is also low due to severe climatic conditions (BirdLife International 2018).
