This species is uncommon. It inhabits inland wetlands and the neritic zone up to 440m asl. It is migratory and known for its non-stop long-distance migration. It breeds in Russia and the U.S.A, and winters in the coasts of Senegal, Egypt, the Netherlands, Croatia, Portugal, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Japan. It mainly forages on arthropods, amphibians, and marine invertebrates (BirdLife International 2017).
Conservation Status:

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining and its current population size is unknown. The threats to its persistence come from human encroachments including hunting, infrastructure development, and pollution, predator attacks, and climate change (BirdLife International 2017).
