This endemic species is now possibly extinct in India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. It was last seen in the wild in 1949. It was always considered rare. It used to inhabit secluded inland wetlands and congregated in flocks (BirdLife International 2018).

This species is listed as Critically Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species was found to be low for the last two centuries. The current estimate of population is 1-49 individuals. Agriculture and other human encroachments causing habitat loss is the primary threat to this species. Hunting and egg collection is also a major threat to this species (BirdLife International 2018).
