This species is uncommon. It inhabits broadleaf evergreen forests of the hilly regions of India (Sikkim, West Bengal, and Arunachal Pradesh), Nepal and Bhutan at the heights of 900m-1950m. During winters, it descends to the lower altitudes (BirdLife International 2018).

The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to logging and shifting cultivation (BirdLife International 2018).
