This uncommon species is endemic (mainly in Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh). It inhabits lowland grasslands of sparsely vegetated semi-arid areas. It breeds during May-January in small groups (BirdLife International 2018).
Conservation Status:
This species is listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/)According to the IUCN Red List Assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population estimate of 6,000-15,000 individuals. The major threat to this species is live capturing and trading, leading to mortality due to the stress of being trapped (BirdLife International 2001).
